The Nintendo Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus

From iFitness101.com

I have been a fan of this game (exercise) system since it first came out in 2006. What a great idea to get people to be more active, while keeping them entertained at the same time. Really, that’s what we all want right?

With active leisure activities getting less and less common, and obesity on the rise, not everyone wants to go to a gym and feel self-conscious about them selves. But the mass gym memberships and equipment sales in January prove that people want to get healthy – this is where the Nintendo Wii can help!

I love using this myself, especially to mix up my workouts, or when the weather is bad, or when I want to have fun with my wife and friends. I even worked at a health club in Mt. View, California named Overtime Fitness that had one for the members to use. Very proactive thinking on their part!

Nintendo has two versions of the exercise game system. The Wii Fit and the Wii Fit Plus. Here’s the lowdown:

Wii Fit

The Wii Fit is currently the second best selling video game in history. The Wii Fit uses a unique platform peripheral called the Wii balance board, allowing the software to, among other uses, calculate your Body Mass Index or (BMI) when you enter your height. The game has about 50 different activities, which I’ll list in a bit. Furthermore, the Wii Fit allows its players to take body tests and compare their results without the game disc by installing the game’s own “Wii Fit Channel” to the Wii Menu.

Training on Wii Fit is divided into four categories: Yoga, Aerobics, Strength Training and balance games. The activities provide a great core workout, emphasizing controlled movements rather than overexertion (just like us trainers do). And the Wii Fit includes over 50 different activities and exercises in the four categories.

Just like with a personal trainer, new activities can be unlocked by gaining “Fit Credits”, which are accumulated in the “FitBank”, a small piggy bank dedicated to keep track of time spent on Wii Fit. Minutes of Fit Credits are equal to the number of minutes doing an activity rather than the number of minutes of overall game play.

As you advance and get better, new yoga poses or muscle workouts are unlocked based on the total time spent working out. Being the best at an activity with a 100% score, or playing an activity a certain number of times unlocks more rigorous versions of that activity.

The game also allows a user to keep track of activities outside of the game such as stretching, gardening, swimming or dancing, which are then added on to the activity log, but not included in the daily exercise time.

Wii Fit Plus

In addition to the original Wii Fit activities and options, Wii Fit Plus also incorporates 15 new balance and aerobics games (referred to as “Training Plus”) and six new strength training and yoga activities.

New features include a calorie burning counter, the ability for users to create custom fitness regimens or choose from a number of specialized routines based on specific objectives and available time, as well as having the option to create profiles for pets and babies. Users will also be able to navigate more quickly between exercises.

So if you’re afraid to go to the gym, like to exercise in your underwear, or want to be active with the whole family this game is a fantastic way to do it.

Even with my experience I found myself being challenged and becoming addicted to the fun. My personal training colleagues and I found ourselves laughing most of the time when creating our own unique players (that look like ourselves) and when we realized how lacking in some exercises we were.

Have a look at the demo video at the bottom of this post. If you have the Wii Fit, or have used one, post a comment and let everyone know how you liked it.

The price is about the same as a yearly gym membership, but you and your family can use it year-after-year. Here are a couple of good prices that I found:

Great post! I’m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it’s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case

I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read to begin with. I am still pondering over the opposite points of view, but I’m tipped heavily toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so great about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
