Hangover Prevention and Cure

From iFitness101,

Well it’s New Year’s Eve today and, like myself, I know many of you are going to have a drink or three tonight. : )

I’ve also learned that as I get older, one thing is for sure, I don’t recover as easily as I did when I was younger.

Even if you don’t plan on drinking much, after that first drink or two creeps up on you, you might soon have another to keep the fun feeling going – they don’t call them “Spirits” for nothing!

So, today I’m going to go over some tips to help you avoid (or lessen) that dreaded hangover the next day.

What Causes the Hangover (besides the obvious)?
Drinking an alcoholic beverage that contains impurities or preservatives can give you a hangover – even if you only have one drink. Sometimes impurities are intentionally added, such as zinc or other metals, which may be added to sweeten, or enhance the flavor of certain liqueurs. Otherwise, it matters what you drink and how much you drink. The cheaper the alcohol, the more impurities it has.

The biggest reason for a hangover is because the ethanol in the drink causes increased urine production, leading to dehydration. Dehydration causes headaches, fatigue, and dry mouth. Alcohol also reacts with the stomach lining, which can lead to nausea.

How to Prevent or Lessen the Hangover:
The only sure way to prevent a hangover is to avoid drinking. Besides, alcohol is considered “Empty Calories”, meaning, it adds calories to your diet with no nutritional benefits.

While you may not be able to totally prevent a hangover, drinking a lot of water or other rehydrating drink will go a long way toward preventing or lessening most hangover symptoms.

FACT: you’ll feel miserable until you are re-hydrated.

Try drinking a glass of water after every two drinks to help prevents the symptoms. Also, drink a big glass or two of water before you go to bed. So you may have to get up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself, but it’s better then having the hangover the next day – especially if you have to work!

If you do have to work the next day, I found that drinking an energy drink, like Red Bull, will help you feel better in a flash (after you’ve had your water of course).

Here’s Why:

Vitamin B1 and B12: They help prevent the buildup of glutarate in the brain, which may be associated with part of the headache associated with a hangover. Other B vitamins are depleted when you drink as well, so taking a B vitamin complex (before you go out helps for later), or an energy drink, which are packed full of B vitamins may be beneficial.

A BIG No-No to Help a Hangover
While it may be alright to take a couple of aspirin to deal with a hangover, don’t take a couple of acetaminophen (Tylenol) tablets. Alcohol with acetaminophen is a recipe for potentially lethal liver damage.

Things to Remember
Again, alcohol calories are “Empty Calories”, and if your goal is to loose weight, here are some numbers to keep in mind:

One ounce of alcohol = seven calories.
3,500 calories = 1-pound of body fat.

Serving size is one glass (200 ml) = Calories
Margarita = 453
Martini = 413
Mint Julep = 143
Old Fashioned = 206
Pina Colada = 297
Screwdriver = 200
Singapore Sling = 230
Sloe Gin Fizz = 120
Tequila Sunrise = 253
Tom Collins = 120
Black Russian = 291
Whisky Sour = 166
Blue Lagoon = 179
White Russian = 360

If you add up how many you’ll typically have in a night, and add to that the meal/s for the day, the calories can add up REALLY fast. You could easily consume 2,000 in just one night!

How serious are you about loosing weight this year? Are you going to burn off the extra calories the next day to reach your goal?
Your body only has two options for the extra calories – Store them as body fat, or burn them off for energy.

    Great article. There’s a lot of good data here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Ubuntu with the latest beta of Firefox, and the layout of your blog is kind of bizarre for me. I can understand the articles, but the navigation doesn’t work so well.

    Hey I just wanted to let you know, I really like the written material on your web site. But I am utilising Firefox on a machine running version 8.x of Crashbang Ubuntu and the look and feel aren’t quite satisfactory. Not a big deal, I can still essentially read the articles and explore for information, but just wanted to inform you about that. The navigation bar is kind of tough to apply with the config I’m running. Keep up the superb work!
